The "Barage"
|
|
Welcome to the "barage" (Barn+Garage). Shortly after purchasing my home, I began work on the restoration/transformation of an existing, 100+ year old bank barn foundation, with the goal of creating a garage/workshop/studio in which I could build the cars of my dreams. The construction took just over a year and consisted of the excavation and grading (by hand) of the floor area, placing and grading of an entire dump truck load of gravel, four concrete pours totaling over 20 cubic yards, a base wall of approx 140 concrete blocks, fourteen 32 foot long roof trusses and countless 2 X 4's, sheets of plywood, nails, screws, and shingles. The result was a two story structure with the main lower area for cars and a upstairs studio/shop. I still have to finish the exterior paint and trim work and the permanent electrical, but it is usable now! (finally)

| Here, I've already completed pouring the floor concrete and restoring the top of the original foundation wall and I've added the wooden "extension walls". Next step: install the trusses you see on the ground there. It wil be a big job. Each truss is 32 feet long, 11 feet tall and weight 238 pounds. |

| Here, all the trusses have been erected. The "dormer" entrance is on the right, and even the small roof trusses for the storage area are up (on the left). The upstairs floor has also been installed. Just waiting to start the roof plywood. (Disregard that date on the shot. It's wrong.) |

| Here the doors are on and windows in. It's watertight and I've got plenty of temporary lighting and power inside. I still have to finish painting and install the permanent power. |

In October I finally got around to painting the Barage. Because of the texture of the siding, I felt it best to rent a sprayer. Let me tell you, this thing was FUN! It lays down about a 3' pattern and makes the job go so much faster. It cost about $70 a day to rent from Home Depot and in my opinion was well worth it. |

Somehow I forgot to take a picture when I was finished painting so I just took one. (Yeah we got about 7" of snow the night before.) Externally, all that's left to do is install and paint the green trim. That will really finish the looks of the Barage. |
